Of Longing and Belonging (2016)

Western Edge Youth Arts presents Of Longing and Belonging, two new performances on May 12th and 13th at Courthouse Youth Arts, Geelong. Both performances weave between sharp, surprising comedy and physical theatre, exploring ideas about local and global identity from the unique perspective of Geelong’s youth.

Belonging is a theatrical comedy which follows a group of young refugees on the streets of Nairobi, fantasising about life in Geelong, a place they’ve heard of but know nothing about. Devised and performed by Geelong Edge, this is the debut performance of the city’s first home-grown African theatre ensemble, based in North Geelong.

Longing, performed by young actors from East Geelong, is a magic-realist retelling of Homer’s The Odyssey, a dream like journey told through humour, poetry and digital art.

Performances will be followed by a community forum where audiences from across the city can converse about the global relevance and local specificity around the sort of city they would like to live in.
