Iago (2015)

Cooper's Malthouse, May 7-9 2015

Produced by Western Edge Youth Arts

Iago re-imagines Shakespeare’s Othello in a rat-infested boxing gym in inner Melbourne, where the original plot is spliced with stories of young people who reflect the cultural diversity of Australian society.

Told through physical theatre and fast poetic dialogue, the story becomes an exploration of contemporary misogyny woven into an edgy thriller as it careers towards its devastating conclusion.

"Tackling the themes of Shakespeare’s morally complex tragedy Othello is challenging, but this visceral and provocative re-imagining handles it bravely and delicately." - TimeOut

"The idea that hatred of women and fear of sexual failure is what lurks behind this most implacable and enigmatic of Shakespeare's villains is actually pretty compelling, and it gets full play here." - The Age
